Honest Take
DIY Mold Test Kits
We're a testing company, but we won't sell you something you don't need. Here's the honest truth about DIY kits — when they help and when they mislead.
What DIY kits do well
- Cheap (often under $20)
- Available at any hardware store
- Useful for confirming visible growth is mold
- Better than nothing if budget is tight
Where they fall short
- Settle-plate kits collect heavy non-airborne spores — not what you breathe
- No outdoor baseline = no real comparison
- Lab fees often add $30–$80 per sample
- Most don't identify species — just 'mold present'
- Results not accepted by insurance or escrow
When to skip the DIY kit
If any of the following apply, professional testing pays for itself — usually within the first paragraph of the report:
- You need defensible data for an insurance claim
- You're in a real estate transaction
- Someone in the home has unexplained respiratory symptoms
- You suspect hidden mold behind walls or in HVAC
- Post-remediation clearance is required
