Black Mold Testing

Independent black mold (Stachybotrys) testing in Los Angeles

Not every dark spot is black mold — and not every black mold is the species people fear. We collect calibrated samples and let an independent AIHA-accredited lab identify exactly what's there, so you have facts instead of fear.

What 'Black Mold' Actually Means

'Black mold' is a popular term, not a scientific one. In common usage it refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a dark-pigmented mold species that grows on chronically wet cellulose materials — typically water-damaged drywall paper, wet ceiling tile, and cellulose insulation. Stachybotrys deserves attention because of its mycotoxin profile and its association with sustained moisture problems, but it's far from the only dark mold, and a dark-pigmented spot in a Los Angeles home is more often Cladosporium, Aspergillus niger, or simple soil and grime than true Stachybotrys.

The only reliable way to know what a dark spot actually is is independent lab identification. Visual guessing — by you, by a remediation salesperson, or by anyone else — is unreliable. We collect the right sample type for the situation and let an AIHA-accredited microscopist identify it.

How We Test for Black Mold in LA County

If there's visible suspect dark growth, surface sampling (swab or tape-lift) is the right primary tool — it goes straight to the source and identifies the species. If there's a strong suspicion of Stachybotrys with no visible target — usually after a long-standing leak behind a wall — we use calibrated air sampling with a spore-trap cassette. Stachybotrys spores are heavy and don't aerosolize readily, so a clean air result doesn't fully rule out hidden growth; surface or bulk sampling at any visibly affected area is more diagnostic.

All samples are shipped under chain of custody to an AIHA-accredited lab. Standard turnaround is 1 to 2 business days. We never identify Stachybotrys ourselves — that determination is made by the lab, which is what makes the result defensible.

Health Considerations and What Reports Mean

Health responses to mold — including Stachybotrys — vary significantly between individuals. We are mold testers, not physicians, and we don't make medical claims. What we provide is the environmental data: what's present, in what concentration, and where. Your physician or allergist uses that data alongside your symptoms and medical history to make care decisions. We are happy to speak directly with your medical provider at no charge.

What to Do If Black Mold Is Confirmed

If lab analysis confirms Stachybotrys or another mold of concern, the priorities are containment, remediation by a qualified contractor, identification and repair of the moisture source, and independent post-remediation clearance testing before reconstruction. Clear Home does not perform remediation, but we provide a short list of remediation contractors we've personally watched do clean work across LA County. We receive no referral fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell from a photo if it's black mold?

No — and neither can anyone else. Photo identification of mold species is unreliable. Lab identification of a physical sample is the only defensible method.

Is black mold an emergency?

Confirmed indoor Stachybotrys with active moisture warrants prompt response, but it isn't typically an evacuate-the-house emergency for healthy adults. Your physician should weigh in for vulnerable household members.

Can I just bleach it?

Bleach kills surface mold but doesn't address the moisture source, the spores already released, or growth that's penetrated porous materials. Proper remediation includes containment, removal, and source repair.
