Swab & tape-lift sampling for visible suspect growth in LA homes
When you can see suspect growth, surface sampling identifies exactly what species are present — so the right next step is based on lab data, not guesswork.
When Surface Sampling Is the Right Tool
Surface mold sampling answers a specific question: 'What species is this visible suspect growth?' It's the right tool when there's a discrete area of discoloration, fuzzy growth, or staining that you want to identify by genus before deciding how to respond. It's not the right tool for evaluating overall indoor air quality — that requires calibrated air sampling.
Common surface sampling scenarios in Los Angeles include: small spots on bathroom grout or caulk, suspect discoloration on a window jamb or sill, growth on an HVAC closet wall, suspect material in a crawlspace or attic, and any visible growth uncovered during a remodel or repair.
Swab vs. Tape-Lift: Which Method We Use
We use two surface sampling methods depending on the substrate. A swab sample uses a sterile collection swab moistened with a transport medium, used on smoother or grouted surfaces. A tape-lift sample uses a clear adhesive tape pressed firmly against the suspect surface and lifted away, used on more porous substrates and on actual fuzzy growth where spore-bearing structures need to be preserved intact for microscopic analysis.
Both methods are shipped under chain of custody to an AIHA-accredited laboratory for identification. Standard turnaround is 1 to 2 business days.
What the Lab Reports Back
A surface sample report identifies the mold genera present (typically Aspergillus/Penicillium, Cladosporium, Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Alternaria, Ulocladium, and similar) and characterizes whether the growth is rare, occasional, frequent, or abundant. Unlike air samples, surface samples don't produce a quantitative spore count per cubic meter of air — they tell you what's growing on the surface, which is usually what you need to know for that specific question.
We translate the lab report into plain English, explain the implications of the species identified, and recommend specific next steps based on the area affected and your specific concern.
Combining Surface Sampling With Visual Inspection
Surface sampling is almost always paired with a visual inspection of the affected area and the moisture source that's feeding the growth. Identifying the species doesn't fix the problem; finding and addressing the moisture does. Our standard recommendation is a brief visual inspection of the affected area at the same visit as the surface sampling, so you leave with both the lab result and a clear understanding of why the growth is there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a surface sample tell me how bad my mold problem is?
It tells you what species is growing on the surface. For overall air quality and exposure quantification you also need air sampling. We'll recommend the right combination based on your situation.
How long does collection take?
Surface sample collection itself takes only a few minutes. Including the brief visual inspection of the source, plan on 30 to 60 minutes on-site.
Can I collect a surface sample myself and send it to the lab?
We don't recommend it. Improper collection contaminates the sample and produces unreliable lab results. Professional collection with chain of custody is the only way to get defensible data.
