Lab-verified indoor air quality mold testing in LA County
Calibrated spore-trap air sampling that quantifies what's actually in the air you're breathing — analyzed by an independent AIHA-accredited laboratory and compared to an outdoor baseline collected the same day.
What Indoor Air Quality Mold Testing Actually Measures
Indoor air quality mold testing uses a calibrated air pump and a spore-trap cassette to draw a known volume of air over a known time interval. The cassette captures both viable and non-viable mold spores in the air a person is actually breathing. The cassette is then shipped under chain of custody to an AIHA-accredited laboratory where a microscopist identifies and quantifies the spores by genus.
Critically, the indoor sample only has meaning when compared to an outdoor baseline collected the same day, in similar conditions. Mold spores exist outdoors in every Los Angeles environment; the question is whether the indoor environment shows an unusual elevation, an unusual species profile, or marker species that signal an active indoor source.
When Air Quality Testing Is the Right Choice
Air quality mold testing is the right method when there's no visible growth to swab but there's reason to suspect a problem: persistent musty odor, unexplained allergy or respiratory symptoms, a recent water event with no visible aftermath, post-remediation clearance, or a tenant or buyer complaint without a specific visible target. It's also the most common method for indoor-versus-outdoor comparison and for documenting overall indoor air quality.
Air sampling is less useful — and sometimes misleading — when there's obvious visible growth that needs to be identified by species. In those cases surface sampling (swabs or tape-lifts) is the better tool. We choose the method that actually answers your question.
How We Collect Air Samples
Each air sample uses a calibrated pump drawing a known volume — typically 75 to 150 liters — over a measured time, into a Zefon Air-O-Cell or equivalent spore-trap cassette. We collect one outdoor control sample at the same time the indoor samples are taken, in a location upwind of the building envelope and away from obvious outdoor mold sources. Indoor samples are placed in the breathing zone of the rooms of concern.
Sample location, volume, time, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and weather conditions are all logged. Chain-of-custody paperwork accompanies the cassettes to the lab, where spore identification and counts are performed by certified microscopists. Standard turnaround is 1 to 2 business days; same-day rush is available.
Understanding Your Air Quality Report
Your report includes the raw lab data, the indoor-versus-outdoor comparison, identification of the dominant mold genera, a plain-English interpretation, and specific recommendations. There is no single 'safe' spore count — the meaningful comparison is always indoor versus outdoor, and the species profile matters as much as the total count. We will walk you through the report at no charge and are happy to speak directly with your physician, allergist, attorney, or insurance adjuster.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many air samples do I need?
Most residential projects use 2 to 4 samples: one outdoor control plus one indoor sample per area of concern.
Will air testing tell me where the mold is?
Air testing tells you whether elevated indoor spore counts are present and which genera are dominant. Locating the source still requires a visual inspection — which is why we always pair the two.
Can I just buy a hardware-store mold test kit?
Settle-plate kits don't quantify exposure and have no outdoor control. They produce data that's essentially impossible to interpret. Calibrated air sampling analyzed by an AIHA-accredited lab is the only reliable method.
