Not all dark mold is Stachybotrys, and not all Stachybotrys is dangerous. Sorting fact from fiction.
Myth 1: All black-colored mold is 'toxic black mold'
At least 80 mold species can appear black to the naked eye. Stachybotrys chartarum is one specific greenish-black species that requires lab confirmation — and visual identification alone is unreliable.
Myth 2: Bleach kills mold permanently
Bleach disinfects surfaces but does not penetrate porous materials like drywall or wood. The EPA does not recommend bleach for porous mold remediation.
Myth 3: A clean visual = safe air
Roughly 40% of elevated indoor spore counts we measure come from hidden growth behind walls or in HVAC systems — never visible without sampling.
